Children’s Dentistry

Dental care is essential for every person, but it is especially crucial for children who are just developing their smile. Even baby teeth need care and attention, so it is imperative to get your child into the office to begin their preventative and corrective care. There are many components that go into children’s dentistry and each visit is customized specifically to the needs of your child.

Preventative Care

Preventative care is important for maintaining a healthy and vibrant smile. Preventative care for children involves cleanings, fluoride treatments, exams and sometimes x-rays depending on your child’s age. It is advised to start bringing your child to the dentist when their teeth first come in, but it isn’t uncommon for most parents to bring their children in around their second birthday. The sooner you bring your child into the office, the better off they will be in beginning a solid oral health and hygiene routine.

Sealants

Sealants are also commonly recommended for children who are prone to getting cavities. Sealants are a thin, clear protective layer that is cured onto the surface of your child’s tooth to prevent decay from getting underneath. Sealants usually are applied to the back teeth to prevent tooth decay. Once the sealant is placed, it quickly bonds into the grooves of the teeth forming a protective layer over the enamel of each tooth blocking out food particles and bacteria that can cause decay. They are virtually invisible to the naked eye and can last for one to two years before needing to be reapplied.

Who are good candidates for Dental Sealants?

Usually children and teenagers are the best candidates for sealants. Adults who do not have decay or fillings in their molars can also benefit from the process of receiving sealants. Patients coming in between the ages of 6-14 benefit the most from dental sealants because it offers protection from cavities and decay through the cavity-prone years.

How long do Dental Sealants last?

With proper care and hygiene, dental sealants can last for up to 10 years. Coming in for regular checkups will allow the dentist to inspect the sealants for chipping or wearing and can replace them as needed.
