Dental Extractions in Norwalk

Dental Extractions in Norwalk

One of the most commonly performed dental procedures is an extraction. Extractions are crucial for reducing pain, getting rid of decayed teeth, as well as making room when orthodontic work is needed. At Dental Care of Norwalk, we perform a variety of extractions at your own convenience and in a comfortable, fear-free environment.

What is a Dental Extraction?

A dental extraction is performed after it is deemed that a specific tooth needs to be removed. For some patients, especially those who are going to be wearing dentures, multiple extractions may be done in order to make room for the prosthetic. Extractions may also be performed under emergency circumstances if the area is causing the patient a lot of pain. Tooth extractions are performed by a dentist or an oral surgeon and is a relatively quick outpatient procedure with either local, general or iv anesthesia. Teeth that are broken or impacted below the surface , such as wisdom teeth, will require a more detailed surgical procedure.

When are they needed?

Dental extractions may be needed because a tooth has decayed to the point of no return or there is severe infection inside the tooth. Some patients may need to have one or more teeth removed to make room for a prosthetic, like a full plate of dentures. Others may need an extraction performed because they are going for orthodontic work and have a severely overcrowded smile.

Teeth can also be surgically removed in the case of wisdom teeth or impacted teeth below the surface. The dentist will perform an examination and x-ray to determine if an extraction is the right option for you. Keep in mind that even if an extraction is needed, the procedure for most extractions is quick and relatively painless. It can be done at your own convenience and when you are more comfortable with having the tooth removed, however the longer you wait the risk for infection increases.

What happens during the procedure for a Dental Extraction?

Each dental extraction is different based on the patient and the situation that the tooth needs to be removed. First you will receive dental x-rays, to help us determine the condition and placement of the tooth. You will then be given an anesthetic to numb the area. Our highly trained dentists will then begin to remove the tooth. You should not feel any pain, however sometimes you can feel a lot of pressure in the area due to the dentists having to rock the tooth back and forth to loosen it from the ligaments and socket. Once the tooth has been removed the area will be thoroughly cleaned and if needed, sutured as well. You will be given after care instructions that you will need to follow, and a follow up appointment will be scheduled. Depending on the type of anesthetic used, you may need someone to drive you home as the effects of the medication can linger for a short time.
